New Jersey bond passes – 64 % success for conservation funding nationwide

by

New Jersey’s $400 million Green Acres bond measure passed 52 percent to 48 percent on a day when voters threw out a one-term Democratic governor in favor of a Republican–suggesting again that conservation is neither a “red” issue or a “blue” issue but a green one.  The measure extends a string of 12 victories for statewide conservation funding measures in New Jersey since 1961.

There is a good story about the measure’s passage at Bloomberg.com

Across the nation, in spite of the lagging economy, 64 percent of the state and local conservation funding measures on the ballot passed, according the folks at TPL’s Conservation Finance service, who track current measures and maintain the LandVote database of such measures going back to 1988.  The total for conservation: $448 milllion

Here is a TPL press release on yesterday’s results.

More ballot measure news as it becomes available.  For now, congratulations to New Jersey voters for continuing their winning streak.

Congratulations – this is wonderful work you are doing. As someone who spent every summer on the NJ shore and now frequently visits, I am all too aware of the overdevelopment that continually threatens New Jersey as well as other states. From pulling down trees to make way for widened parkways to filling in swamp land to build more housing that is not needed – New Jersey does it well!

Thank you so much for saving that fabulous parcel of land on Osborne Island in Mystic Islands to be enjoyed now and in the future.
